ABSTRACT
Objective. To estimate the prevalence of overweight and
obesity (OW+OB) among school-age Mexican children and
adolescents (2020-2024) and to analyse associated sociodemographic
factors.
Materials and methods. National, regional,
by locality, and by state OW+OB prevalence was estimated in
a sample of 10 979 school-age children (5 to 11 years) and
9 142 adolescents (12 to 19 years) from the Encuesta Nacional
de Salud y Nutrición Continua 2020-2024. Logistic regression
models were fitted to assess the association between OW+OB
and sociodemographic factors.
Results. OW+OB prevalence
was 36.6% in school-age children and 40.1% in adolescents.
Quintana Roo and Baja California (≈50%) reported the highest
prevalences. In school-age children OW+OB was higher
with tertiary or higher education maternal education (OR=
2.10; 95%CI: 1.60,2.76). In both groups, having an overweight
or obese parent significantly had greater odds of OW+OB
and those living in rural areas had less odds of OW+OB.
Conclusions. OW+OB prevalence among Mexican schoolage
children and adolescents remains high. Further research
is urgently needed to develop target public health strategies.
