ABSTRACT
Objective. To describe the prevalence of adults with diagnosed,
treated, and controlled hypertension, disaggregated at
the national and state levels, and to estimate the number of
people who may develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) due
to hypertension.
Materials and methods. Data from 34
954 participants in the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición
2021-2024 survey were analyzed. Prevalence rates were estimated
at the national and state levels. Using the Globorisk
and the WHO risk score, the number of people who could
develop CVD due to hypertension was estimated.
Results.
Nationally, the prevalence of hypertension in adults was 29.1%.
The 62.9% of adults with hypertension were aware of their
condition, and 60.1% of those treated with medication had
blood pressure (BP) under control. The lowest prevalence of
hypertension was observed in Colima (21.3%) and the highest
in Sonora (40.7%). 1 119 060 CVD events could be avoided
over the next 10 years if BP in adults were normalized.
Conclusions. Hypertension is a public health problem in
Mexico, and the health system’s performance in controlling
adult BP is lower in the northern states. Prompt, coordinated,
population-based strategies are needed to reduce the burden
of hypertension in Mexico.
