ABSTRACT

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus could be related to the appearance of otoneurological diseases.
Objective:v Determine if there is a relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and otoneurological conditions.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive-correlational study, with a non-probabilistic convenience sample composed of a study group of 30 people with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 30 people as a control group. Otoneurological variables were measured using a battery of subjective tests. The variables were: Static balance, dynamic balance, cerebellar function, vestibulo-ocular reflex and utricular function.
Results: Static balance: 43.3% of the study group showed alteration in the Romberg test and 53.3% in the sensitized Romberg test. Both tests were significantly related (p<0.0001) in the study group, but not in the control group. Dynamic balance: 73.3% of the study group showed significant impairment (p= 0.0016) in the Unterberger-Fukuda test. The rest of the tests did not have significant results for any group. Vestibulo-ocular reflex: 43.3% of the study group reported spontaneous nystagmus (0.000797), the rest of the tests did not show significant results for any group. Cerebellar and utricular function: There was no statistical significance in any test, for both groups.
Conclusions: It was demonstrated that there is no relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the presence of otoneurological disorders. However, he highlighted that the group of people with DM 2 with otoneurological alterations may show different effects according to the tests performed.
