ABSTRACT

The use of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) has increased significantly in recent decades, alongside the incorporation of technologies such as target-controlled infusion (TCI) and processed electroencephalographic monitoring. These advances have enabled more individualized and precise anesthesia; however, they also involve technical and pharmacological processes that may be associated with human error, equipment failure, or pharmacodynamic variability. This narrative review aims to synthesize the available evidence and propose practical recommendations aimed at strengthening safety in the administration of TIVA, including aspects such as delivery systems, monitoring, special clinical scenarios, and professional training. The standardization of protocols, the appropriate use of technology, and the systematic training of anesthesiologists constitute fundamental pillars for reducing adverse events and optimizing clinical outcomes.
