Mouth mucosa evaluation in patients with chronic contact with diesel (fire-eaters)

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the damage caused to the mucosa membrane of the mouth by diesel as a predisposing factor, in a population at risk. It consisted of making a clinical revision of ten “fire-eaters”. After check up, the area which had been supposedly affected was dyed with 1% toluidin blue, to show pre-malignant and malignant injuries. Incision biopsies were taken for analysis under a microscope. Well defined epidermoid carcinoma was found in one case (10%), light epithelial displasia in 5 cases (50%), hyperqueratosis in 3 cases (30%) and leucoedema in one case (10%).
