ABSTRACT

The University of Mexico was founded 456 years ago on September 21, 1551. Three American countries claim the supremacy of the foundation of the first University in the American Continent: Santo Domingo, Peru and Mexico. In here we produce probatory evidence that the University of Mexico was the first to open its faculties in America. There is a description on the beginning and evolution of college education in Mexico since the opening of the Imperial College of Santiago Tlatelolco in January 6, 1536, until the initiation of activities of the University of Mexico and its historical journey through the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries and its role in today’s college education in Mexico.
