ABSTRACT

Nicotine pouches (NPs) have entered the Mexican national market. Their composition includes cellulose, flavorings, buffering acids, and nicotine salts that dissolve in the mouth and are absorbed through the gums and mucosa. NPs use is associated with the development of nicotine addiction and the appearance of lesions in the oral cavity. A possible increased risk of cancer associated with nitrosamines in these products has also been described, along with long-term adverse effects from nicotine exposure such as metabolic problems, chronic inflammation, and cognitive impairment. In this context, and considering their growing popularity, NPs could pose a significant risk to public health, particularly in adolescents and young adults, by acting as an initiation pathway toward nicotine addiction and promoting the renormalization of nicotine use, including that of regular cigarettes.
