ABSTRACT
Coined and classified by René Le Fort, Le Fort fractures encompass a wide range of injuries involving multiple bony structures of the skull, with complex fracture lines extending across them. They most commonly occur in young adults and occasionally in pediatric patients, primarily associated with physical assaults and motor vehicle accidents. Diagnosis, potential complications, and management planning are supported by the Le Fort classification, which facilitates a general approach—though not without its inherent limitations. The large number of sensory and functional organs housed in the face and skull represents a significant concentration of functions within a relatively small space, adding to the anatomical complexity of the craniofacial region.
Extensive and complex injuries carry the risk of impairing function or damaging any facial structure, resulting in difficulty performing essential functions such as vision, hearing, speech, chewing, swallowing, and breathing—not to mention the containment of the brain, spinal cord, and the face’s psychosocial roles. High-impact traumatic injuries pose the potential for lasting sequelae and limitations in any of these areas. As a result, their management requires a multidisciplinary team.
