ABSTRACT

Obelisks form a distinct phylogenetic group restricted to RNA datasets. They lack obvious homology with previously characterized genomes or viromes. Obelisk RNA reads assemble into circles of approximately 1,000 nucleotides. These circles adopt rod-shaped RNA secondary structures and encode at least one member of a novel protein superfamily, termed "Oblin". Furthermore, a subset of obelisks was found to harbor obelisk-specific hammer-like ribozyme motifs. Obelisks are globally distributed and possibly overrepresented in mammalian datasets, and constitute a distinct and diverse group of phylogenetically related RNA elements.
