ABSTRACT
Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip is a condition characterized by the progressive loss of bone viability due to vascular abnormalities, affecting the trabecular architecture of the bone. Among the classic risk factors is prolonged use of corticosteroids, which has been widely documented as a cause of AVN. Beginning in 2019, with the appearance of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), an increase in cases of AVN was identified in post-COVID patients, including those without a clear history of prolonged steroid therapy. It has been hypothesized that the inflammatory and hypercoagulable state induced by infection with the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could contribute to the disruption of intraosseous blood flow, promoting necrosis. However, current evidence remains limited and does not allow for the establishment of a definitive causal relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the development of AVN. The aim of this study is to analyze whether there is a significant association between the post-COVID state and the appearance of avascular necrosis, considering both inflammatory and therapeutic factors (steroid use), based on the literature available to date.REFERENCES
