Current overview of Chagas Disease in the Huasteca Hidalguense region, Mexico

ABSTRACT
Introduction. In Mexico, the actual epidemiological situation of Chagas
disease remains unknown. Estimates from 2001 to 2019 indicate an increase
from 1.5 million to more than 4.0 million people affected by Chagas disease.
The last national study that determined the seroprevalence of Trypanosoma
cruzi was conducted in 1992 and identified the Huasteca Hidalguense region
as an endemic focus of the disease.
Objective. To examine the current situation of Chagas disease in the resident
population of the Huasteca Hidalguense.
Materials and methods. Eight hundred and fifty sera samples from a random
and voluntary population in the Huasteca Hidalguense were analyzed to
determine the presence of anti-Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies (Architect
Chagas Reagent kit and ELISA-Biokit kit). An epidemiological questionnaire
was applied to each participant. The statistical program Stata® 14 was used
to determine prevalence and measures of central tendency.
Results. 84.7% of the population analyzed had no knowledge of Chagas
disease. A seroprevalence of 0.95% (95% CI: 0.47-1.88) was determined for
Trypanosoma cruzi, and the following associations were identified: having
lived in a house with the presence of triatomines, having been bitten by a
triatomine, and not knowing about the existence of Chagas disease.
Conclusions. The seroprevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi in the Huasteca
Hidalguense shows a decrease compared to that reported in 1992. However,
it is necessary to inform the population about the existence of the disease in
the region and the consequences of having Chagas disease.
