ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the association
between family functioning and other
individual and family risk factors related
to adolescent pregnancy.
Methods: A
cross-sectional analytical study was conducted.
The study included 85 pregnant
adolescents receiving care at the Family
Medicine Unit No. 39 of the Mexican Institute
of Social Security in Villahermosa,
Tabasco, Mexico. The sociodemographic
Benítez-Meza questionnaire on factors
related to adolescent pregnancy, and the
ff-sil Family Functioning Assessment Instrument
were administered. Descriptive
and inferential statistical analyses were performed
to explore the association between
family functioning and a family history of
adolescent pregnancy.
Results: Among
the participants, 84.7% were between 17
and 19 years of age, 88.2% were living in
a consensual union, and 95.3% had completed
middle school education. 84.7%
reported having sufficient information
regarding sexuality and contraception,
while 42.4% indicated having had two
or more sexual partners. A family history
of adolescent pregnancy was reported by
38.8% of the participants. According to
the ff-sil assessment, 44.7% came from
functional families, whereas 55.3% exhibited
some degree of family dysfunction.
A statistically significant association was
found between family functioning and
a family history of adolescent pregnancy
(p= 0.001).
Conclusion: Adolescent pregnancy
was associated with dysfunctional
family dynamics and a family history of
adolescent pregnancy. Family functioning
emerged as a key factor to be considered
in preventive interventions targeting this
population.
