ABSTRACT

Introduction: fibromyalgia is a central sensitization syndrome that affects 2 to 8% of the world's population. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on the topic with the aim of promoting a conceptual and therapeutic update. Material and methods: documents with the word "fibromyalgia" in the title were identified in the PubMed database. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews published within the last five years were selected. Results: the results of the 142 identified documents were divided into sections related to the syndrome concept, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic considerations. Conclusions: the conceptualization of fibromyalgia has undergone conceptual, diagnostic, and therapeutic changes. This syndrome has been underestimated and unattended. An updating on the topic for health providers is required.
