Infiltrating nasal myiasis due to naso-ocular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Case report

ABSTRACT

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation in which fly larvae develop in animal and human tissues such as open wounds, skin, and internal organs. This patient is a 41-year-old male diagnosed with infiltrating nasal cavity dependent T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma under treatment with brentuximab. He came to the emergency department with odynophagia, dysphagia, asthenia, and adynamia progressing to acute respiratory failure, leading to orotracheal intubation and intensive care. Thirteen days after admission, he was referred to the otolaryngology department due to the presence of larvae in the left nostril. Larval extraction was performed through endoscopic rhinoscopy with the patient under general anesthesia. The patient was intubated, with the airway sealed with an endotracheal balloon and oropharyngeal packing, without transanesthetic complications. This case is relevant because this worm was eradicated in North America in 1991. However, two probable cases of myiasis in humans were reported in Chiapas, Mexico, in April 2025. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen health education measures for vulnerable populations.
