ABSTRACT
Introduction: childhood obesity is a public health problem associated with metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemia, which increases cardiovascular risk from a young age.
Objective: to describe the lipid profile characteristics of children and adolescents with obesity treated at a secondary care medical unit.
Material and methods: a retrospective study was conducted, reviewing 95 medical records of outpatients aged 6 to 17 years with obesity (BMI ≥ p 95) treated between 2023 and 2024 at the pediatric endocrinology service. Weight, height and serum levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and triglycerides were recorded. Statistical analysis was descriptive.
Results: males predominated (56.8%). The median age was 12 years. The median total cholesterol was 209 mg/dL, LDL 150 mg/dL, HDL 33 mg/dL, and triglycerides 219 mg/dL. All participants had hypertriglyceridemia, 61.1% with hypercholesterolemia, 77.9% with high LDL, and 75.8% with low HDL. The most frequent combined pattern of lipid abnormality (38.9%) was high total cholesterol, high LDL, low HDL, and high triglycerides.
Conclusions: children and adolescents with obesity have a high frequency of dyslipidemia. These findings reinforce the importance of screening and comprehensive management of pediatric patients with obesity.
