ABSTRACT

Upper respiratory tract infections are the leading infectious cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, as well as the main reason for medical consultations and antibiotic use, despite the fact that the majority of these infections are of viral etiology. In this context, the objetive is to describe the antibiotic prescribing patterns in the treatment of acute upper respiratory infections in children under 5 years, through a descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study. Diagnoses and antibiotic use for upper respiratory infections were analyzed in children under 5 years who attended the outpatient clinic at the Children’s Hospital of the State of Sonora during the period from October 2023 to March 2024. The results indicate that a total of 451 children received antibiotic treatment, representing a rate of 12.4 cases per 100 patients seen. The age group with the highest morbidity was 0–12 months, accounting for 48.7% of cases. The most common clinical diagnosis was pharyngotonsillitis in 55.6% of the cases. Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (63.8%) was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic. Based on this analysis, it was determined that it is necessary to implement continuing medical education strategies and targeted education for healthcare professionals and caregivers in order to reduce the unnecessary prescription of antibiotics.
