ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of grampositive and gramnegative bacteria
in cultures (blood and urine cultures) of patients with acute leukemia and febrile neutropenia
in a tertiary hospital in Puebla, Mexico.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational and prospective study was conducted
in patients over 18 years of age with acute leukemia and febrile neutropenia, who underwent
blood and urine cultures at the Puebla Specialty Hospital, General Division
Manuel Avila Camacho, Mexico, from February to July 2023.
RESULTS: Of 180 patients with acute leukemia and neutropenia, only 87 had fever.
Blood cultures were positive in 27 (31%) patients, and Escherichia coli was isolated in
16 (18.3%). Urine cultures were positive in 21 (24.1%) patients, and E. coli was identified
in 11 (12.6%). Only 2 urine cultures (2.2%) were not reported.
CONCLUSIONS: In most patients with acute leukemia and febrile neutropenia, no
bacterial pathogen was identified. No bacterial growth was observed in 60 (68.9%)
blood cultures and 64 (73.5%) urine cultures. E. coli was the most frequently isolated
bacterial pathogen.
