ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To describe the types, severity, and response to treatment of anemia at 12 weeks of follow-up in women with gynecological or breast cancer.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, retrospective, and longitudinal study including women with gynecological or breast cancer referred for anemia to the anemia clinic of Gyneco-Obstetric Hospital 3, CMN La Raza, from June 2023 to June 2024. Variables related to cancer type (cervical, breast, ovarian, endometrial, and vaginal), stage, type of anemia (iron deficiency, multifactorial, and deficiency), and severity were analyzed. Hemoglobin concentrations at diagnosis, the presence of clinical bleeding and symptoms of anemia, and response to treatment at 12 weeks of follow-up were assessed.
RESULTS: There were included 31 patients. Frequency of cancer types: cervical (18 out of 31 patients), breast (n = 5), ovarian (n = 3), endometrial (n = 3), and vaginal (n = 2). Twenty patients were in stage I-II and 11 in III-IV. Iron deficiency was the predominant type of anemia, followed by multifactorial and deficiency-related. Treatment included intravenous iron and erythropoietin in all patients, cyanocobalamin and folic acid in 6 and transfusions in 10.
CONCLUSIONS: Intensive management of anemia in women with gynecological or breast cancer shows recovery of erythrocyte parameters and reduces the frequency of anemia symptoms.
