misuse of psychoactive prescription drugs, general population, Encodat 2025, Mexico.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To identify potential psychoactive medications with misuse reported by the Mexican population. Materials and methods. We used data from the Encuesta Nacional de Consumo de Drogas, Alcohol y Tabaco 2025. The sample included 2 347 439 individuals who engaged in misuse of psychoactive prescription drugs lifetime. Results. The most frequently reported medication was tramadol (86.8%), an opioid medication. This was followed by clonazepam (76.5%) and diazepam (15.1%), both classified as tranquilizers. Methylphenidate ranked third (37.8%), a stimulant prescribed for medical use. Other medications mentioned were reported infrequently, including morphine, fentanyl, alprazolam, flunitrazepam, clobenzorex, phentermine, amphetamine, phenobarbital, and pregabalin. Conclusion. Regulation of the misuse of psychoactive prescription drugs in Mexico requires strengthening coordination, oversight, and monitoring mechanisms, promoting prevention strategies, and advancing health education.
