ABSTRACT
Objective. To describe sociodemographic, mental health, and
drug use–related factors associated with past-year drug use
among individuals with and without dependence.
Materials
and methods. A total of 692 Mexican individuals aged 12-
65 years who reported substance use during the 12 months
prior to
Encuesta
Nacional de Consumo de Drogas, Alcohol y Tabaco
2025 participated in the study.
Results. Seventeen percent
met criteria for drug dependence. The factors most strongly
associated with dependence were drug use through high-risk
routes of administration (aPR= 5.13, 95%CI: 1.65,15.94); use
of three or more drugs (aPR= 6.73, 95%CI: 4.15,10.93), and
having two or more mental health problems (aPR= 3.69, 95%CI:
1.93,7.06).
Conclusion. These findings underscore the need
for prevention actions and programs aimed at delaying the age
of onset, strengthening the implementation of early interventions
and harm reduction strategies targeted at populations
with current substance use, and promoting treatment models
that incorporate comprehensive approaches to substance use
disorders and mental health.
