ABSTRACT
Objective. To analyze trends in the prevalence and intensity
of cigarette consumption in Mexico, distinguishing
between daily and occasional use, based on information from
the national tobacco surveillance system.
Materials and
methods. Data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey
Mexico (GATS) 2009, 2015, and 2023, and the
Encuesta
Nacional de Consumo de Drogas, Alcohol y Tabaco
(Encodat)
2016 and 2025 were analyzed. Prevalence and consumption
intensity (cigarettes per day/week) were estimated with
confidence intervals, accounting for the complex survey
design. Trends and differences were analyzed by sex, age,
and educational level.
Results. The prevalence of daily
cigarette consumption remained at around 7% during the
study period, with an average intensity close to eight cigarettes
per day. The prevalence of occasional consumption
also remained stable; however, its intensity declined between
2009 and 2023, with an increase in the proportion of individuals
smoking fewer than five cigarettes per week. This
change was more evident among men, individuals aged 45
to 65 years, and those with lower educational attainment.
Conclusions. Although prevalence has remained stable,
consumption intensity has changed, highlighting the impor
tance of incorporating intensity indicators into tobacco
surveillance.
