ABSTRACT
Objective. To analyze motivation, quit attempts, and smoking
cessation using data from the National Survey on Drug,
Alcohol, and Tobacco Use 2025.
Materials and methods.
Descriptive analyses and seven multivariable logistic regression
models were conducted to identify factors associated
with smoking cessation.
Results. Among current smokers
(
n= 2 624), 72.17% reported motivation to quit and 47.8%
had made at least one quit attempt (last year). Among former
smokers (
n= 2 668), 47.23% had maintained abstinence for 0
to 5 years and 52.7% for more than five years; 11.4% received
brief advice, 1.9% contacted the national quitline (línea de la
vida), and 4.2% received pharmacological treatment. In the
multivariable models, female sex and exposure to health
warnings were associated with higher motivation and quit
attempts. For cessation, being female, older age, and occasional
smoking increased the likelihood of quitting, whereas
heavy alcohol use and exposure to secondhand smoke in
private settings reduced it.
Conclusions. Strengthening
gender-sensitive interventions is essential, as well as reducing
alcohol use and secondhand smoke exposure, and increasing
healthcare providers’ involvement in delivering brief advice
and pharmacological treatment.
