ABSTRACT

Objective. To analyze the prevalence and correlates of motivation to quit smoking and avoiding smoking because of pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on cigarette packages among adult smokers in Mexico. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional study using data from the 2025 National Survey on Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Use (Encodat 2025). A total of 2 477 adult smokers were included (weighted population: 13.4 million). Prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Poisson regression models with a log link were fitted to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios, accounting for the complex survey design. Results. Overall, 39.3% reported that PHWs motivated them to quit smoking, and 26.9% reported that PHWs caused them to avoid smoking when they were about to light a cigarette. Occasional smoking, lower nicotine dependence, recent quit attempts, and interest in quitting were associated with a higher likelihood of reporting both PHW responses. Conclusions. PHWs remain associated with smoking cessation-related behaviors among adult smokers in Mexico. Periodic updating of warning labels and complementary tobacco control measures may strengthen their effectiveness.
