Exposure and impact of tobacco advertising on nicotine consumption in Mexico, Encodat 2025

ABSTRACT
Objective. To characterize the exposure to tobacco and
nicotine product advertising (TNPA) and its association with
knowledge, susceptibility, and consumption among Mexican
adolescents and adults.
Materials and methods. Crosssectional
study of the 2025 National Survey on Drug, Alcohol,
and Tobacco Use (Encodat). Data from 3 803 adolescents and
14 905 adults was analyzed. Prevalence ratios and relative
risk ratios were estimated using Poisson and multinomial
logistic regression models.
Results. Exposure to TNPA was
high, especially at points of sale (32.4%) and online (26.2%); it
was also associated with greater knowledge about nicotine
products in both groups. In adolescents, it was linked to susceptibility
to smoking and higher consumption of e-cigarettes
and cigarettes.
Conclusions. Despite prohibitions, exposure
to TNPA persists and is associated with adverse outcomes,
emphasizing the need to strengthen regulatory measures.
