ABSTRACT

Objective: To present a case of a cavernous hemangioma of the thyroid operated through video-assisted surgery.
Setting: Medical Center ISSEMYM, Toluca, Mexico.
Design: Case Report.
Description of the case: Male patient, 41 years old, who presented increased volume at the level of the left anterior side of the neck, 8 months before being admitted to the institution. He presented a gradual and progressive growth accompanied by local pain. A thyroid nodule was diagnosed; a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was performed, removing 10 cm3 of hematic liquid by which symptoms ceased. The mass and symptoms recur. Studies made were: thyroid profile, neck ultrasound, gammagraphy, FNAB with a diagnosis of cystic thyroid injury, low-uptake, negative to malignancy. The patient was then subjected to left video-assisted hemithyroidectomy without complications. The histopathological result revealed a cavernous hemangioma of the thyroid gland.
Conclusions: We report the case of a very rare tumor of the thyroid gland. Reports in the world literature are scarce and there are no reports on any having been resolved through video-assisted surgery. Based on our experience, it is the first observed case. Prognosis is good.
