ABSTRACT

Introduction: Toxoplasmosis is the disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. It is a zoonosis that causes visceral manifestations mainly in the brain, heart and retina, especially in immunosuppressed patients carrying the human immunodeficiency virus. Its occurrence is considered rare in immunocompetent patients.
Clinical case: It is presented the case of a 63-year-old patient with a sudden clinical picture of seizures and fever of 38.5 oC. During the imaging examinations, images were found with the appearance of brain abscesses and brain biopsy was indicated, so that the disease was confirmed when tissue cysts were evidenced with the presence of trachyzoites and bradyzoites. The evolution was favorable.
Conclusions: Cerebral toxoplasmosis in an immunocompetent patient is a very rare case in clinical practice. In this clinical case it presented with a sudden onset and the diagnosis was made by imaging studies and brain biopsy.
