ABSTRACT

Cholangitis is a serious disease with a mortality rate of up to 10%. Diagnosis is based on clinical, biochemical, and imaging findings. Residual stone after cholecystectomy can cause cholangitis, but the mechanism by which this occurs has not been previously reported. We present the case of a patient who, following cholecystectomy, developed cholangitis due to a residual stone in the remnant of the cystic duct. The high sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic studies are not infallible. A residual stone can cause cholangitis due to extrinsic compression; it should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
