ABSTRACT
Hattori cysts were first reported by Hideo Hattori in 2005, also known as paravertebral Müllerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum. They are lined by non-stratified cuboidal to columnar ciliated epithelium, and their origin remains unknown. Of all mediastinal masses, ~20% (range 10-30%) are cysts; of these, perhaps 5% represent Hattori cysts, although they are rare and only about 40 cases have been reported in the literature (as of 2022). All reported cases of Hattori cysts to date have occurred in women, aged between 40 and 60 years.
