ABSTRACT

Tarsus accessory bones (TAB) incidence is variable; the most common are the os peroneum, os trigonum, and os naviculare; classified as normal anatomical variants, they can be confused with avulsion fractures in patients with tarsal trauma; the diagnoses of posterior ankle impingement syndrome, painful os peroneum syndrome, and os naviculare syndrome have the presence of TAB as a common and exclusive factor. The coexistence of two or three TAB in the same foot is observed in only 4.4% of cases. 2.7% of TAB are initially misdiagnosed as avulsion fractures.
