ABSTRACT

Introduction: High-Per formance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) has established itself as the reference method for the identif ication and quantification of normal hemoglobins and hemoglobin variants. Objective: to evaluate the importance of using HPLC for hemoglobinopathy detection in patients from the Soconusco region of Chiapas between July 2025 and May 2026, and to assess the potential implications for blood banks. Material and methods: a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted. Samples were processed using HPLC on an automated TOSOH (HLC-723GX) analyzer. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2010. Results: a total of 2,993 samples were analyzed; 45 (1.5%) tested positive, and 2,948 (98.5%) tested negative. Hemoglobin E (HbE) was the most prevalent hemoglobinopathy, accounting for 1.1% of cases. Conclusions: the prevalence of hemoglobinopathies observed in the study population suggests that donor screening contributes to improving the selection and allocation of blood components.
