Almost all countries across the globe face the challenge of an ageing population.1 And in many blood collection agencies (BCA) older blood donors will have to stop donating once they reach the upper age limit for blood donation. There is also increasing evidence that older people are the largest consumers of blood and blood products.2 These trends indicate that demand for blood can be expected to increase across the globe.
