ABSTRACT

Anal gland neoplasia is a rare disease, mostly communicated as case reports by several authors. Also known as anal duct carcinoma, colloid carcinoma, or mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, this tumor gives rise to difficult problems: of diagnosis, because of the absence of a tumor within the rectal lumen, and the slow growth of a lesion towards the ischiorectal fossae, and certainty diagnosis can be made only by open deep biopsy of the buttock mass; and of treatment, radical surgery is needed in most patients for local control. The role of subsequent chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is not yet defined. We present this case in order to emphasize the characteristic features of this uncommon tumor, and we made a wide review of its origin, frequency, diagnosis, clinical and pathologic findings, and treatment at present.
