Actitudes de los padres sobre sexualidad en sus hijos, valores y medidas preventivas de sida

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to know the attitudes of parents regarding the sexuality of their children and the preventive measures for HIV/ AIDS and STDs they would use. A survey to 1,584 parents of adolescents in 97 High schools of the Metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo León Mexico was applied from March to June 2002. Although the majority of the parents (96.2%) agree on the necessity of sexual education for their children, half o less than that speak with them about themes as the sexual content in television (50.2%), in Internet (32.6%), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (46.8%), AIDS (54.7%), condom (37.3%) and condom use (37%). Most of the parents (75.3%) think that speaking about condom with their children, predisposes to sexual relationships; Parents, communicate easily with their teenagers on themes as family (91.6%), love (79.4%), courtship (66.4%), marriage (62.1%), honesty (91.7%), responsibility (92.2%) and monogamy (65.4%). As far as HIV preventive measures is concerned a low percentage of parents is agree with sexual abstinence (19.4%), and monogamy (5.2%). Sexuality is a hard topic to speak to teens due to: lack of knowledge or sense of efficacy (33.3%), shame (28.9%), child of inappropriate age (10.4%) or opposite sex to the interviewed parent (5.9%). Although parents recognized these obstacles, almost half of them has not seek any information about sexuality.
