ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency rate of chickenpox in pregnancy women attended in the hospital and the frequency of transmission to the newborns, complications and mortality. Material and methods. The hospital files in between 1992-2002 were reviewed. Twenty pregnant women with varicella and its 22 neonates were studied. Data about the clinical disease, its evolution, complications and treatment was obtained. Results. The frequency rate, in relation to 53,500 pregnant women attended was 3.7/10,000; eight newborns developed neonatal chickenpox; there were not cases of congenital infection; two of children with perinatal varicella had complications, (skin infection and sepsis), one child was dead. Seven of the 8 children with neonatal varicella received treatment with aciclovir, and five further received human gammaglobulin. Conclusions. The women with chickenpox is the same of the rate reported in the literature.
