ABSTRACT

Objective. To review the clinical management of children with pyomyositis. Material and methods. We reviewed 20 files cases of pyomyositis treated from 1995 to 2001. The youngest was 1 month age and the oldest 16 years age. Data obtained was in regard to the clinical and bacteriological findings, and reports related to laboratory findings and imaging ultrasonic assessment. We got information about clinical evolution, treatment and complications. Results. Below 2 years age, there were 7 cases; and > 6 years to 16 years age, 11. In 17 patients the blood white cells count was higher than 11,000 mm3, and the C-reactive protein was higher than 0.05 mg/dL in 10/12. Surgical treatment of the pus collection was done in 10 cases Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Enterococcus sp were found in 4, 3 and 2 cases. In six patients the disease was associated to chickenpox. In most of the children we used dicloxacillin and clindamycin-penicillin. Conclusions. The results we got resamble the findings reported for other authors: in regard to the clinical feasures, bacterial agent and anatomic place affected. Age frequency seems to be different to other reports.
