ABSTRACT

Malnutrition is commonly associated to congenital hearth diseases. It is partially explain by the hemodynamic repercussions of the heart defects but there are an other factors implicated in this problem. Among all these factors implicated in the low intake of energy and proteins in the diet in these children are: the difficulty in breathing, the taquipnea and hepatomegaly. All of these features have special relevance in the children growth and its nutritional status. For this reason it is important to prevent malnutrition or to treat the children if they are malnourished, but is better, if it is possible, to do the early surgical correction of heath defects, even so the risk of the surgery. A general lines for evaluation the nutritional status and the nutritional requirements of these children are mentioned.
