ABSTRACT

The mucormycosis is an infectious disease usually affecting immunocompromised patients. In adults, the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts are frequently affected. In the newborn, the clinical infection of the gastrointestinal tract can simulate necrotizing enterocolitis. A case of a neonate with gastrointestinal mucormycosis is described in this paper, in whom the diagnosis was done at the autopsy. The infection was localized in the stomach, small bowel and colon. There was not other organ affected. As the conclusion, the Mucorales which affect the gastrointestinal tract must be considered with the other etiological agents which cause necrotizing enterocolitis.
