ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was the analysis of the development of sexual curiosity in children who sleep with their parents. Two groups were studied, each one of 60 mother-child binomial. Children’s age was 3 to 6 years; 60 co-slept (Experimental Group) and 60 dyads did not (Control group). The results indicated that children who sleep with their parents or only with their mother, show an exacerbation of sexual and regressive behaviors, less independence, as well as prolongation of the oedipal phase which interferes with their adequate development. Sleeping with their children interferes with the intimacy of the parents and leads to difficulties in the relationship as a couple. Secondarily, parents who sleep with their children satisfy their own needs of security and confidence. Furthermore, the study revealed that these families are too permissive with their children, and cannot set adequate limits.
