ABSTRACT

Objective: Our aim was to ascertain attitudes of medical staff and parents of hospitalized children toward active and continuous family presence (ACFP) during child hospitalization. Design: Cross-sectional and descriptive study. Material and methods: From August to December 2002, 133 surveys were applied to pediatric medical staff and 175 parents at a pediatric hospital in Mexico City, with questions arranged in a Likert scale to ascertain parental and staff opinions toward ACFP. The sample was calculated with a 95% confidence level (95% CI) and a 0.5 sample margin of error (p = 0.9 and q = 0.1). Social and demographic aspects were requested, as well as parental attitudes concerning medical staff performance and support-staff attitude toward hospitalized children and their parents. Results: Parents scored frankly positive toward ACPF, while the medical and supporting staff had a neutral attitude toward ACFP. In terms of age, the parental group was younger than the hospital-staff group. Parental attitude toward hospital-staff performance of activities was very favorable, while the opinion of personnel staff with regard to working with children and their parents was only slightly favorable. Conclusions: ACFP is not yet well accepted by this hospital staff. These results aim to promote the benefits of this proposal prior to attempting to establish ACFP in this pediatric hospital.
