ABSTRACT

A brief story about the evolution of pregnancy care in Mexico is presented. The main aspects related to this care and its changes, the midwife function and her participation in pregnancy care is included. The knowledge of pregnancy care and its changes, results and weaknesses will allow to adequate for a better mother and child health care to decrease mortality. Family, especially the father, midwifes and nurses must participate in prenatal care especially in low risk pregnancy. On the other hand programs to attend pregnant women at home must be implemented in order to reduce hospital occupation and women stress.
