ABSTRACT

This Paper is an authors view on genomic medicine and hepatology. The study begins with a reflection derived from the Digestive Disease Week (American Association of Gastroenterology) celebrated in Los Angeles, California, USA in May 2006. A brief summary is presented about the historical process of medicine with emphasis on scientific medicine. Further on it describes over time until our present days, the developmental process of science in the field of viral hepatitis, with the study of hepatitis B virus. It concludes with a summary of the advances in genomic medicine that in hepatology were given at the meeting and reflection about the necessity to change pre and postgraduate Mexican programs in health sciences in order to re-orientate this new knowledge towards health care professionals with the new profile in genomic medicine.
