ABSTRACT

Neuronal proliferation during central nervous system (CNS) development is a phenomenon comparable to programmed neu-ronal death. Once CNS development ends, several neuronal lineages die or change their morphology, as it occurs to Cajal-Retzius cells whose proliferation peak takes place during embryonic period. At ontogeny, CRc synthesize and release reelin, a stop-signal protein for the migrating neurons to the cortical layers, although at the end of neuronal migration the majority of CRc disappear from layer I at neocortex. The fate of Cajal-Retzius cells and the possible mechanisms related to the “vanishing” of these neurons has been subject only of recent research.
