Mouth diseases in psychiatric patients

ABSTRACT

A transversal study on mouth pathology in psychiatric patients is presented, they attended the dental service psychiatric hospital of the Mexico health ministry between the months of November 1998 and March 1999. Forty five patients with organic dysfunction and 31 schizophrenia were reviewed. The most common mouth pathology in these patients are: caries on hard tissues and gingivitis on soft tissues, as well as lesions in the mouth mucosa. As conclusion is suggested a preventive attention on the patients through the full exploration of the stomatognatic apparatus and not only dealing with problem that makes the patient seek the dental service, with the goal of stablishing an opportune diagnostic.
