ABSTRACT

Introduction: Since the operative laparoscopy growth, a great necessity of training equipment for specific skills like eye-hand coordination, bidexterity and deep perception was noted among others. To acquire them different equipments were used, complete laparoscopes, physical simulators and virtual reality simulators.
Objective: To prove the utility of a physical simulator for the development of surgical laparoscopic skills.
Design: Comparative, experimental, longitudinal, homodemic and prolective study.
Method: First we developed pilot studies to prove the quality of vision in the physical simulator and the consistence of the skills assessment instrument. Later 2 randomized groups were formed with voluntary students of the Medicine School of the BUAP, in both they make 5 different exercises and repeat them in 10 sessions, group 1 used the physical simulator (Simulap®) and group 2 with a complete laparoscope; they were assessed in sessions 1, 5 and 10, the measuring instrument include points for time in seconds plus point for errors.
Results: We recruited 63 students in group 1 and 62 in group 2, demographics were similar in both, there were a meaningful reduction in the score through the practice sessions, but it was not significant between groups. In the global score the percentage of the decrease was 63% for group 1 and 60% for group 2.
Conclusions: The physical simulator Simulap® is as useful as a complete laparoscope for the development of surgical laparoscopic skills.
