ABSTRACT

The aspiration of foreign bodies into the airways can produce death in a few minutes or go unnoticed and produce chronic respiratory symptoms. We present the case of a 63 year old woman that aspirated a seed of the sapodilla fruit ("chicozapote" in México); she was symptomatic for six months before seeking medical help. Several attempts to extract the foreign body failed because the seed was fixed to the mucosa by a small spur that penetrated the bronchial mucosa; a mucosal granuloma was treated by laser. She underwent successful lower lobe bronchotomy.
