ABSTRACT

From that the reverend Stephen Hales (1677-1761) realize his publication on the measurement of arterial pressures in animals in 1733, was when initiate the interest to measure this clinical parameter in human beings and was Samuel Von Basch who design the first not invasive system for the measurement of the arterial pressure (the sphigmomanometer) in 1883 which was modified later by Riva Rocci in 1896. This form of measurement the complement afterwards Korotkoff, Russian pathologist, who introduced the technology (skill) of determining the arterial pressure by means of the auscultation in 1905. This fabulous achievement of measuring the blood pressure allowed to relate Bright’s observations between the year 1827 and 1836, on patients with sick kidneys and that were presenting cardiovascular anomalies. With base in these first observations initiate the whole waterfall of studies that tried to determine the real role of the hypertension in the public health; in 1913 Jeneway discovered that this one was associated with a major morbimortality related principally to cardiac fault, cerebro-vascular accident and uremia. Little to little was penetrating into the etiopathogeny of the arterial hypertension and of many mechanisms that contribute to his prevalence. One of the more studied was the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) who inclusive in the current epoch does not stop surprising us for the new implications that this one has not alone in the arterial pressure, but also in other routes so much metabolic as proinflammatory. In the present article we try to include the basic functions and the new functions observed of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system focusing basically in the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE), Angotensin II (AGII) and the receptors of the angiotensin Type 1, type 2 and Type 4 (AT-1, AT-2, and AT-4 respectively).
