ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of periodontal disease in primiparous women in Celaya, Guanajuato.
Material and methods: Descriptive and transversal study, included women with a first pregnancy of less than 20 weeks of gestation who agreed to participate in the study; they were attended at the Urban Health Center in Celaya, which is part of the Ministry of Health in the State of Guanajuato. All subjects underwent dental examination to determine if they had any periodontal diseases. It was measured the probing depth (PD) and level of clinical attachment loss (CAL) using a periodontal probe UNC-15. Periodontal disease was defined as mild periodontal disease with at least 1 site with PD › 3 mm and CAL › 2 mm, as well as severe periodontal disease with at least 4 sites with PD ≥ 5 mm and at least 4 sites with CAL ≥ 2 mm. It was also measured the presence of caries, the percentage of plaque, the number of teeth and bleeding after probing.
Statistical analysis: We recalculated frequencies for categorical variables and mean and standard deviations for quantitative variables.
Results: Among the 29 women included in the study, 25 of them had periodontal disease, with a prevalence of 86.2%. Of those, 21 had mild and 4 had severe periodontal disease; all had at least 20% of plaque, and 44.8% of them had 100% of plaque; the mean number of sites with bleeding after probing was 53.8 (± 30.7).
Discussion: Because this was a convenience sample, the results are limited. However, the sample indicated a clear predominance of the presence of periodontal disease. Additional studies are needed to determine the effects of periodontal disease on pregnancy.
