ABSTRACT

With the aim to detect the presence of the "horn fly", Haematobia irritans (L) in confined dairy cattle in the State of Aguascalientes in Mexico, the present study was conducted in sixty dairy farms which were selected at random. In these farms, Holstein cattle was kept in free-pen housing dairy cow systems. Farms were visited once a month from May to July in 1997. Ten cows in milk production were selected at random, and flies were collected from the dorsum, flank and front of the legs using an entomological trap. Taxonomic identification was carried out. In the study period, Haematobia irritans flies were found in all dairy farms, and other flies like: Stomoxys calcitrans, Musca domestica, Fannia canicularis and Muscina stabulans were also collected over the animals´ body. The presence of Haematobia irritans in confined dairy cattle in a semiarid region is an important event because it coexists with the stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans. In conclusion, Haematobia irritans is present, and widely distributed in confined dairy cattle in the state mentioned above.
