ABSTRACT

The frequency of Leptospira serovars was determined by means of a serological survey carried out in sows which had given birth four times or more. The animals were allocated on 17 farrow- to finish farms (114 sows) and 12 backyard pig facilities (50 sows). Serum antibodies were detected by the microscopic agglutination test using 12 serovars of L. interrogans. A titre of 1: 100 or above was considered as a positive one. Serovar bratislava was found on 28% of the farm and backyard pigs, and panama in 24.5% and 34%, respectively. Antibodies against other serovars were found in a range of 0.8 to 2.6% of the sows from the farrow- to finish farms. From 8 serovars detected, 7 (87.5%) were found in sows from farms and only 3 (37.5%) in backyard sows. When these results were compared to those obtained previously, it was concluded that bratislava and panama have become the most frequent serovars. They were probably introduced by imported pigs, and it would be advisable to include these serovars in vaccines for leptospirosis prevention.
