ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe our experience in the treatment of intracardiac myxomas.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Retrolective, observational, descriptive, and transversal study.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measures for qualitative variables.
Patients and Methods: We reviewed the clinical records of patients with antecedents of intracardiac myxomas covering the period from January 1995 to December 2006, and analyzed the following variables: age and gender, symptomatology, functional class, localization, size, surgical treatment, as well as postoperative evolution.
Results: Thirty-four patients (24 women), mean age of 45.9 years (range from 1 to 75 years) were subjected to intracardiac myxomas surgery in an 11-year period. Duration of symptoms was from 2 to 8 months. In all cases, diagnosis was made by means of echocardiography, finding 29 myxomas in the left atrium and 5 in the right atrium. Surgical treatment consisted of simple resection and, in some cases, placement of an autologous pericardium graft. In all cases, the myxoma diagnosis was confirmed by means of histopathologic studies.
Conclusion: The diagnosis and surgical treatment, together with the improvement in diagnostic methods (transthoracic and esophageal echocardiogram) in the last years have led to a higher survival rate and a decrease in morbidity.
